Our Story

Growing Together Since 2013

Shining Star Learning Hub (SSLH) embarked on its journey in 2013 with a clear and heartfelt mission:

To make a difference for children and families with disabilities.

Founded by Jessica Sumithra and Lee Yu Ying, SSLH set out to create a learning community where everyone—children, parents, families, and ourselves, the SSLH team, and our dedicated network of professionals in the community—could come together to learn, grow and thrive.

The journey started with early intervention programmes and school shadowing services, underscoring the essential role of parental involvement.. Yet, it quickly became evident that solely focusing on "fixing" or protecting the child was neither enough nor entirely right.

We knew that more was needed.

Let the Child Lead

Listening to children and understanding their unique needs are essential for fostering their growth and development. A child's journey goes beyond merely shaping what society might deem 'right' behaviours—it’s about nurturing values, building confidence, and fostering a deep sense of belonging. Every child deserves a meaningful life—one rich with connections, opportunities, and the empowerment to actively participate in their community.

Empowering Parents & Strengthening Families

Parents and caregivers are the foundation of a child’s growth and development. With the right knowledge and skills, families can confidently make informed decisions that shape their children’s futures. By equipping parents and caregivers with effective tools and strategies, they can become exceptional teachers and guides, creating a nurturing home environment that promotes learning, connection, and understanding.

Creating Real World Opportunities

Children learn best through hands-on experiences and meaningful real world interactions. Our programmes are thoughtfully designed to provide a safe and inclusive environment where children and teens can naturally develop their social skills. By actively engaging with the community, they move beyond just learning—they participate, grow, and form meaningful connections that last.

  • Social outings: Visits to local cafés, grocery stores, and salons where they are welcomed and recognised, fostering confidence and a sense of belonging.

  • Community and social events: Activities such as sleepovers, camps, and outreach projects that encourage teamwork, friendship, and personal growth.

  • Supportive network: A nurturing space where children, families, and the community come together to build lasting relationships and connections.

Our Team

Over the years, Shining Star Learning Hub has built a truly unique team. Each member brings diverse strengths and expertise, creating a resilient and harmonious unit united by a shared passion—continuous learning and serving with compassion.

Our team includes professionals with backgrounds and training in psychology, behaviour analysis, education, Montessori, and counselling.

Beyond our work, we cherish the connections we’ve built as a team. You’ll often find us enjoying lunch together, discovering new cafés and dessert spots, volunteering for causes we care about, or even bonding over a friendly game or two on the sports courts. These moments strengthen our relationships, allowing us to grow as both colleagues and friends on this journey at Shining Star Learning Hub.
